See how little room I have used in 7 years of posting? and I always include images.
That got me thinking.... It has to be the size of the image, not the amount of pictures.
Sure enough, after a little bit of searching, I came across an article that pretty much says that: if you keep your images small or with less resolution, like in 70s or 80s size, you are in the safe side.
That is great news! Number one, for a faster downloading of your pages for your visitors, it is always a good idea to keep the images small, and also to try to keep the image-grabbers to get your work then use it somewhere else (which can happen anyway but it helps to keep low res.)
So this is a new reason why keep your images small. They recommend less than 800 pixels, I use about 400 most of the time. And my videos are embedded from youtube.

If you see you are close to the limit, you can: go each post, check the image size, edit, re-upload, re-publish. Lots of work, but well worth it.
or, get a photobucket free membership, and bring the code to your post.
Let me know how much space you have! (◠‿◠)
Update: About editing images....
Most computers come with Paint program, or you can download a version online of a photo editor, there are many for free but you have to try a couple to see which one you like best. Once you have a program --I personally love an OLD version of MS Photo Editor because it is very basic but does all I need. Lets say we do "Paint" for now: you open your image there, and look in the menu for "Resize" and/or "Crop".
If you have too much empty space in the image, crop it out with that tool.
If you have a nice composition or don't want to crop anything, just go to Resize and select a percentage. Most of the time you do around 50% but sometimes it can be more, depending on your camera settings. The more quality the image, the larger it will be in the computer. In some programs you can go to "Properties" and make the image have less "Resolution" which will make it even lighter to upload, store and download, which makes for a faster page to open. A light Resolution is around 70 to 80. But if you are into giving photography to readers, or backgrounds, you will need a huge resolution for better quality!
Once you are done with the editing, always do "Save as" and not just "Save" so you keep the original as well.
Then just go back to the old posts, change the images for the lighter version, and make sure you delete the larger images from the Picasa files. Ta-daa!

that is a great tip. i recently ran out of storage on blogger. now i will resize them before i upload.
I guess even resizing a few will help a long way!
Thank you so much for the information!!
Martha, I am over 60% and I always use low resolution??? Maybe I will delete some of my early posting?
Thanks Martha... I never knew how to check that... and have been hearing about it with other bloggers running into the same problem... looks like I'm OK...

This is great.. wish I had seen this sooner.
I started a new blog but its for the good in the long run.
but I want to make sure I dont do this again to soon. so will check out the photo sizes.
thanks
I never could find out how much space I had. How did you find all this? What is photobucket?
Wish I had seen this before.
Just this week I had that issue come up for the second time. I had an old blog that I no longer use (I have 3 current blogs) so I deleted a bunch of posts from the old blog but I still couldn't upload any pics! I found out when I went to Picasa that even though I deleted them, the pics were still there. I deleted them in Picasa and was able to post on my blog again.
In the future, I had planned to start taking a year or so at a time of blogs posts and have them printed into a book since that can be done for a reasonable price. I figured that it would not only free up space but I'd have hard copies. I love your information, however, so I believe that I will start making my images smaller. That way, I won't be forced to do the book thing before I'm good and ready.
Thanks for sharing the info!

I've had my blog for about six years and I checked my usage after seeing your post. I've used 0.01 GB (0.88%)
I always re-size my photos. It definitely makes a difference!
Do you also have a smaller size? Size is also important. I do not let my images as in the camera, because they can be as big as a bed lol
Do not delete, the whole post, just go one at a time, delete the image from picasa, and re-upload a smaller image. You don't have to do too many, and it doesn't have to be the same day either... just edit a few here and there and it will make a big difference. Just remember to take from picasa the large heavy images
photobucket is a website where you can edit and store images, they are free, although now they have a pro membership I think. I have been a member for maybe 6 years, and still have not run out of space there either! I maynly use it for auction extra photos and stuff like that, and in the past I used it for this blog as well, in the first year, when blogspot didn't have much room for images. way before they joined picasa
Oh wow, maybe you can revive your old blog?
I thought of printing a blog book too, but I have to go back and check all my spelling lol
That is great!
Yes, I noticed that too about newish bloggers running out of space. Thanks for the link. Mine is: 0.05 GB (5.51%)for 7 years. I can still blog for a loooooooong time. :D I usally resize at 640x640.
Paula I wonder if they have a new limit for new blogs? Or maybe is because new cameras use more resolution and people don't know how to make them smaller?
I know some photography blogs want to have huge images to show detail, but not many people really need that...
7 years too? Congrats!
Wow, that's great information, thank you so much! I had a look at mine and I've used up 2,44% which isn't much but I've only been blogging since January. A few months ago I got the advice to always resize every image I put on the net to 72dpi and 500 pixels. I have been doing that since then, maybe my earlier pictures were still too big or maybe they do indeed have stricter limits for new blogs.
thanks for this great tip. i'm going to bookmark that URL, so I can check it out now and then.
I, too, use low-res images all the time so i won't run out of space anytime soon.
Great info...
I run a blog for a friend and she used to blog every day and always massive picture sizes, and instead of her paying I went through the blog and replaced the massive images with small images... Took a seriously long time and a lot of work, but she now has tons of room.
That is wonderful of you to do that Pam! You are so dedicated and so good at organizing!! I remember all your neat work at the group :oD
I think this rate, we have like another 70 years go space hahahaha
Thank you Martha!
Thanks!
I agree on the new cameras being so powerful plus people not resizing.
Thanks! knew there was limits but only just started and I didn't know where to look!! :~)
Thanks for this informative post! I had no idea about this until I read your post and I find I have used up more space than I wanted to!
Very interesting information! I've found lots of people with this problem.
Thank You Martha! I just checked ... I have used up nearly 55% of my space! I just recently started sizing down my photos ... I think if all my future photos are small I'll be OK .
I have begun replacing all my scanned photos to small scale simply because I was concerned about all the space they are using up on the computer. I found many that were like 100+MB! I resized them WAY down!
Letting us know that space is limited on our blogs is invaluable.... Thank YOU!
I wish I'd known this earlier!
That is so interesting.... I deleted photos a couple of times to get more space but in the end I signed up and pay for more space. It's just under two pounds a month.... which I thought was ok not to have the hassle but if I could change back....I would!
Would you have time to explain about the resizing... how and when?
Ha bet you wish I wasn't 'follwing you' now!!!!
