Very cute face! I start from blank usually, but have lately been experimenting with doing a background layer first. It's fun :-)

the red is nice. as for me, I usually start with a blank page and fill the background afterward but I suppose it's a good idea to start with something.

For me, it completely depends on the day. Typically though, I start with a background if I'm feeling blocked. If I have an idea in mind, I start with the face.
