Day 7 of 29. A worried skull

We don't have to like everything we do, right? LOL I'm just going to leave it for covering later on. She has in my opinion some salvageable features, I kind of like the horrible teeth, but the things on the head...? yuck! Wrong color.

Oh well.... We can't win them all can we? ;o)

Three dear friends

These are my last faces to complete 29. I was in shock to see there were some missing, since I took extra time to finish some of the pieces. But anyway, with this little painting, I'm all done :o)
I decided for the coming holidays and because I like the Mexican folklore, I was going to do another Day of the dead art. This is a postcard size acrylic painting.

Their names are from Left to right: Hope, Faith and Charity.

They love to chat over a cup of tea, only that Faith insists on having their tea outdoors, because Hope and Charity make a mess, with them being all bones and that.
~*~

I want to thank everyone that participated in this last 29 faces challenge of the year ♥
So much fun, joy, learning, experimenting, and sometimes stress, shock and disappointment... but hopefully we all did something new, something difficult, met new friends, and learned a bit more about ourselves in the process.

Shall we do it again next year, in February?

Paper bag face

We went to the bookstore and of course I had to get a chocolate fix :oD
While sitting there, I started to doodle a portrait of my daughter. At the end, it didn't look like her, but whatever... I kept it to bring it home to the scanner. I like the image with the bag and all ;o)

Day of the Dead ~ Dia de los Muertos. 13th day of 30

I am running a paper doll challenge, everyone is invited. It is a very early Day of the Day/Dia de los Muertos celebration, and I am posting here because being it a hand made paper doll, I had to paint and it's turning out cute, if I may say that myself ;o)

Here's the doll, free had drawing on water color paper, then outlined in black. a Micron, Sharpie, or any waterproof pen can be used. I wanted a thick line, but a thin line could work too.

A coat of matte medium is good, but also gesso can work for more texture. In this case I did not want bulky texture. Color with watery acrylics, for a watercolor effect that won't get ruined by weather if moisten later. Or by an accidental drop of the whole container on the table, like I have done in the past :oP
Cut along, fix the outline where needed for a finished look.

Keep reading after the brake...

Day of the dead/ Dia de los Muertos Art

I like the more whimsical side of "DoD" art. I don't like grotesque or scary images, but for this season of fall, harvest, celebration of ghosts, spirits and the dead... I like the cute skeletons, which of course  I love to mix with a spun-full of Frida Kahlo flavor!
This is the one painting I have been working on, slowly, as my hand doesn't allow for much this week.

It was hard to start painting on it but I had an idea in my mind to do a Day of the Dead painting, after finding an image in my files of an old painting I made years ago:

How to paint the "bone" look

Here's a little tutorial on how to give the appearance of bone:
Sculpt the figure you want in white clay. Can be polymer, paperclay or any other air dry.

1- First thing you do is gesso it, with the solution a little diluted with water so you don't lose detail. In this case I had a lot of "cracks" that I wanted to show. Use a soft brush so it won't give you deep brush marks. Let it dry well.

2- Once it is dry, give it a coat of watery black acrylic paint. Not too watery, so you really stain the gesso. Let it dry for a couple of minutes.

3- Get a wet sponge and rub the piece until most of the black paint is gone but not so much that it shows the white gesso again. Let it dry. Make sure you stain your under your fingernails as well, eww!

4- Once it is dry you will give it a dry brush coat with just the tiniest drop of yellow paint, dust the brush on all the bumpy areas, making sure it looks transparent and not solid yellow. If you painted it too much, get the sponge and rub gently. Let it dry, that should be really fast.

5- Give it another dry brush coat of white paint, making sure you neither cover the black or yellow, just highlight the bumps.

6- Detail with more black paint as needed, dry, varnish with Satin finish and you are done! You can do a whole body or just parts. In this case I added a magnet.

You can have a cookie now :o)

Halloween and Dia de los Muertos

I have been doing a lot of sewing, and a bit of claying. The sewn items (hats) are all sold to my delight, thanks to my kid who is turning out to be a great advertisement machine LoL but now I have nothing to list in the new shop. I guess everything will have to be listed as custom, so I can have the listing up.
The clay work is mostly skulls. I have been having so much fun making them! Here's a sample photo:

Many layers of paint and satin varnish and you have the bone look. Only that I also added a magnet so they can decorate your locker or fridge in a macabre style :oP
Usually I go for the whimsical and sweet, but this time I went more for texture and dark.

Here are the finished ACEOs before I mail them, I tried to have them kind of like in the past picture :o}

I will list on ebay too, so keep an eye opened.

Skellies, skulls and boney things

I have been merrily drawing Dia de los Muertos Art. I will paint soon, but so far the drawing muse is here so I have to hear the call or she will leave in a tantrum. :oP

What do you think? I personally feel happy so far. I can see every color I want for each.

Fortunately my internet service has been more reliable now, but since I couldn't be online I did more art... funny how that goes, huh? I re arranged the work space a bit too, not too much like last time, that I moved so many things, at the end I guess I packed my inspiration as well, because it took me a while to get back to painting or sculpting!

Hey, I am so thrilled to say, I won a giveaway from the super cool blog DAWG blog!
Can't wait to see my mail!
